AR and STAR Basics
Renaissance Place has an abundance of information and resources on their website. Click this box to visit the Renaissance Training Center for Teacher Tips, Professional Development, and other Resources.
Setting individual goals will level the playing field so ALL students can be successful. Each nine weeks, students who reach their goal will take part in an AR celebration. It is important that you help your students monitor their progress toward achieving their goal.
The goal of AR is to allow all students to feel successful in their reading. STAR allows us to identify a range that will allow each student to find that success. We are going to determine their success by using the AR Goal Calculator. Click this box to go to the Goal Calculator.
Encourage your students to read a variety of books. They should read both long and short books, fiction and nonfiction, to achieve their goal. They should read some books that will be challenging to them, but it's okay to read some easier books too.
Each student will have an AR folder, which will act as their library card. Every time the STAR test is administered, a new reading log should be placed in their folder. You should highlight their entire ZPD range on that sheet. It is important that we allow students to read any books of their choosing within their range. You may adjust their range as needed, but please do not narrow their range.
